Mynes Performance tuning, one of the leading tuners of the R53 will be in El Paso on Saturday April 11 for a tuning day on the dyno. This is truly the best $$$ you'll spend on your modified R53. The tune is $350 plus a very reasonable dyno cost of $100. I have had an RMW dyno tune and it made an incredible difference in the power and feel of the car, so I can highly recommend this event. I will be there to get some more power out of my recently installed cam and straight exhaust.
Refer to the West Texas tuning thread on NAM (1st generation Mini Performance)

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Dyno tuning

Post by drPhilGandini Mon Apr 13, 2009 7:28 am

The Mynes tuning day in El Paso went really well, with 3 guys from Texas and me there. The Mustang dyno was a real heart breaker and the baseline numbers were so low it just reinforced the well-known fact that absolute numbers don't really tell you much--it's the shape of the torque and power curves and how they change that counts.
Injectors all round and a cam for Jose who didn't already have one, and everyone left happy with the power increases: 40HP increase for 2 cars and 20 for mine, as well as 6-7 ftlbs of torque at the peak. Even more impressive was the increase in torque over a wide power range, and smoothing out the power curves.

Mynes has an "out of town" discount--if you head over to their Phoenix shop they take a C-note off the bill. That would cover the hotel room and a beer or two! Maybe you can even get some friends to drive over with you.

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Cool

I wanted to go but had to work. Good to know about the discount in Phoenix. i may be out there for work in a week or so.

You said "injectors all around". Does that mean that everyone ended up needing injectors and a cam to get the boosts in power?

I'm running a CAI, high voltage coil and wires, and a 15 % pulley. Do you think I'll get much of a boost with at tune at this point or should I wait? I am still looking for an exhaust system tht sounds good, won't cost a small fortune, and gives a boost in power. Yeah, I know, it sitting next to the unicorn just to the left of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Smile

I'm pulling decent mpg at this point and don't really want to upset that too much.

So what are your numbers like now? Hp,torque, mpg??

You need to bring your Mini to a lunch, meet and greet, or something. You always had very cool mods.

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Dyno tunes

Post by drPhilGandini Mon Apr 13, 2009 4:59 pm

Custom tunes are expensive (both mine have been $800 with hotel etc.) so they are best done once some worthy mods have been accumulated. All the MCSs on the weekend had CAI, pulleys, spark plugs (Iridium or Brisk), cams, headers and cat backs. Mynes recommends and supports 550cc injectors (up from 330cc stock, 380 JCW). It sounds crazy, but they can scale them and make them work. Many tuned cars with these injectors are showing better gas mileage with higher power--weird.
I personally don't know and don't care. However, I'd suggest you get at least the mods I listed before thinking about a custom tune. The absolute HP numbers were very disappointing but the increases were impressive. Here are the values and deltas:
2003 MCS: (WHP/TQ) 155/144 --> 193/168 an increase of 38/24
2004 MCS: 153/143 --> 193/165 an increase of 40/22
2005 MCS: (mine) 175/161 --> 196/171 an increase of 21/10

I already had a custom tune, which probably explains why my gains were not as big, but the car clearly pulls harder. I will be at the Draggin' in the Minis event to see how this translates on the asphalt. I have absolutely no doubt my car is pulling well over 200whp on a friendly dyno--this Mustang just didn't like Minis on the day.

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Thanks

Post by Max Mon Apr 13, 2009 10:31 pm

That answered my questions. I need a cam and some bigger injectors and a decent exhaust. I kind of already knew this. Injectors don't seemt o be a major install. The cam, on the other hand, will present a bit more toruble for me.

Can't wait to see how you do in the drags. My biggest problem is getting the damn wheels to stick!

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Speaking of tuning...

Someone sent this link to me asking if anyone here has had experience with this gadget or this company. So...anyone?

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Re: Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11

They should buy one and try it... just kidding! A google for this reveals dozens of links to the retailer, but none to any reviews or other commentary on it. I'm a pretty big idiot, but don't you think I would have tried this to get 50 more HP, rather than spend the thousands I have on Dyno tunes to get the 20+ HP I actually got? Call me a skeptical idiot...
But, as I said, buy one, install it and see what it does. If it's so easy to install, maybe we could install one at Faron's dyno party and actually measure the effect?
Are you going to get one, Steve?

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Cheap tune

Post by yelrsub Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:27 pm

No, I'm really not the one looking into it. Besides, what in the world would I do with an additional 50hp??

It looks like it's just for the S, supercharged version, according to their site, but apparently they make these for other models. It's a guy with a PT Cruiser asking about it. He's skeptical too, but not afraid to ask!

Hope to see you at the track!

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty Please pass the snake oil

Post by Max Tue Apr 14, 2009 10:21 pm

Ok, I did a little digging. . . Found this info on a Ford forum.

What this thing appears to be is a variable resistor or something of the sort. It fools the car's ECU by reducing what the IAT sensor reports. So in effect it makes the ECU think it's Intake Air Temperature(IAT) is much lower than it really is. That in turn makes the ECU flow more fuel and advance the spark a bit.

I don't doubt running the engine rich and in an advanced spark state will produce some additional power. But how much?

Dyno Tune in El Paso April 11 Empty The fallout may not be radioacive, but...

I'd be nervous what parts might get destroyed in the process of the trickery.
