SO, Faron has this friend, who knows this guy...
...with a dyno. Looks like he needs $400 to run 10 cars through the dyno.
We need all those R56 owners who have put down the long green on the Alta Turbo-back to come out and see how many ponies they are laying on the ground.
...and I'll throw down the challenge to all you turbo drivers. You'll beat me in the TQE department easily, but I don't know about the WHP...

Let's get this happening. bounce

Dr Phil is correct. I need to get 10 people together. It will cost 10 people $40.00 for two pulls each on a Dyno. They Dyno is at Menaul and Moris area. If I can get 10 people together I can make this happen.

I never tire of tying my Mini down to a dyno and revving the snot out of it...

and eventually I'll find a friendly dyno that reveals a number that I can proudly display on my license plate!!

So I met John with a R56 Alta turboback at the Sandia Mini car show on Sunday, and there's Nathan who also has the Alta turboback on his cool blacked out R56. That's 2. There's me, three. Faron, four. We must be able to convince the founding member of the NM Mini club, Yelrsub to dyno, once he's figured out why the engine keeps skipping a beat (does it really just want to be an R53?). What about Burley with the cool electric blue R53 with lots of cool custom decals? That's 5 for sure. I'm sure we could convince Brad Huftley, the airline pilot to dyno his car again--he's the real racer amongst the lot of us. And Carolyn the fastest woman in a Mini in New Mexico--well, she might not give a rat about numbers...
Andra's husband, Robert. He's a drag racer, he's gotta at least get a baseline on his R53.

We're getting close to 10...

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty Dyno the Sub?

Post by yelrsub Wed Apr 29, 2009 11:12 pm

I could make cool motor sounds and perhaps fool the dyno (and the sickly engine) into thinking it was turbo'd. If I can get the problems worked out before the dyno day, I'll play along.

That being said, anyone have any of these original parts left over after mods?:
oxygen sensors
fuel pressure regulator

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty Hmm??

Post by Max Thu Apr 30, 2009 1:08 am

I'd so this is just a "look see" kind of thing. No tuning? I'm sure all it would do is reinforce the fact that I need a cam, bigger injectors, a cat back, and a ported and polished head. Oh, and I forgot, an few extra $1k's to throw at the car! LOL

I'd rather set up a drive out to Phoenix and get the tune too.

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty A turboback

Post by drPhilGandini Thu Apr 30, 2009 7:10 am

is a bunch of 3" SS tubing that goes from the turbo to tips on an R56, that presumably makes quite a bit of HP (by eliminating some restrictions). It would be cool to see if this relatively simple mod to an R56 makes it more powerful than a really heavily modified R53...

Max, I don't know about you, but $40 doesn't seem to buy me much these days, even at Wahmarh. There's always 2 things that happen at a dyno--you get someone with a JCW who thinks they have lots of power and pulls low 160s Embarassed and someone with a Wednesday car who pulls in the high 190s with only a cold air intake Smile It's all good fun. Just do it.

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty Bahh . . .peer preassure

Post by ADMIN2 Thu Apr 30, 2009 9:47 am

Ok I'll go "rev the snot" out of my R53. But I still want the injectors, cam, and ported head! Low 15's looks like way more fun than low to mid 16's.

I am seeing a change in my car. I pulled my ET tickets from the last 3 years at the track. I seem to be getting slower. Guess the car and I are finally getting old.

Most people start with a base line run, change a part or so and then put it on a dyno to see where you want to go. It can help with knowing where you stand so you don't spend money on things that you don't necessarily need. That is my opinion, take it or leave it.

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty R56 turbo mods?

Post by evilmini Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:57 am

OK. So I read the posts about MINI mods and surf Alta Performance, Minimania, Outmotoring, MossMini and all the others. I figure that to do the thing is going to cost around $2500 plus labor what with all the Alta nick-nack-patty-whack-turbo back plastic hoses (in your choice of flaming red or cerulean blue), air filters, rumbling exhaust, etc. All of which adds up to about 20 hp, they say. This doesn't include the new, bigger and better intercooler replacement (unless you want to carry around bags of ice like Max...) Seems like a lot of money for 20 hp. I've no doubt that all this stuff does make the car somewhat faster (at $125/hp) and fuels our MINI obsession - to which I'm certainly subject. Then I read about the Unichip. Guaranteed 30hp for $739! ($25/hp) Whadda ya think? Or do Unichip + mods and have +50hp for around $3k ($60/hp) which is LOTS less that MINI's Works modification (exhaust system + plus their unichip equivalent + Works badge) for $3200 = ONLY+14hp @ $230/hp). Not that I have the $ to do this. I'm a teacher but I can dream and I'd like opinions...

Dyno Day in Albuquerque Empty And it's good to have a local dyno

Post by drPhilGandini Thu Apr 30, 2009 10:57 am

because you can make better comparisons than if you keep changing dynos like I have. As every dyno reads differently, it's really frustrating. My first dyno over 3 years ago in ABQ had me with 178whp. After 3 years and millions of $$s in mods I pulled 180whp in Dallas (geez). After more money and mods, I pulled 196whp in El Paso. If I'd been a good boy, my bet is that the first dyno read high, the second one a little low, and the last one very low. Still, maybe if you only have 196whp you can only go down the strip in 15secs.

Post by drPhilGandini Thu Apr 30, 2009 11:01 am

Do I have a deal for you!!
I happen to have a Unichip which is for sale. You would need to send it in to get reprogrammed for your R56 (it's got an R53 tune on it at present.) The remap will prolly cost you $100.
But here's the deal. I'll sell you the Unichip for $250 affraid
Why? Because I'm one of the nicest guys on the planet, and I'm never gonna use the Unichip again, so why not?

It's in perfect condition, and complete.

PM if you're interested.

Post by Max Wed May 13, 2009 10:23 pm

Ok dumb questions time . . . So do we have to have 10 cars and $400 or can we have some combination of that? $400 and less cars where each car pays more? Do the cars have to be mini's? I might be able to wrangle a Corvette or two into going.

I'm really interested in running with and without my latest mod to see what the real increase in HP/Tq is.
